What is the Blackbeard Republic?
The Blackbeard Republic celebrates the Outer Banks as more than a place—it's a feeling of belonging. It gives everyone who loves these shores a sense of ownership and kindredship: a name locals wear with hometown pride and a symbol visitors adopt as their coastal home away from home. To different people, The Blackbeard Republic can mean many things—but always a shared love for the Outer Banks.
What is the purpose of the Blackbeard Republic?
The Blackbeard Republic is two things: it is a business and it is a way to give back to Outer Banks communities.
Our brand designs, produces, and sells fun, high-quality goods that let you proudly celebrate the Outer Banks—each piece honoring the region’s rich coastal history.
Through the Blackbeard Republic Community Fund, we raise money for local nonprofits via events and fundraising initiatives, directing support where the Outer Banks needs it most.
Join us—wear the pride, support the place you love.
Why a Republic?
This one is a tongue-in-cheek reference that is built on a modern legend. To fully explain it - we refer you (and tip our hat to) the Conch Republic. You can read more about it here, but as an unserious reaction to a serious situation, the folks of Key West responded to the government choking off access to the Florida Keys by symbolically succeeding from the union and creating their own 'country' and calling it the Conch Republic.
The founder of Blackbeard Republic is a big fan of the Florida Keys and noticed history repeating itself in his own backyard - with the local governmental reaction to Covid - when they closed off the Outer Banks to anyone who did not live here for months. From this action, the Blackbeard Republic was born. You can read the 'legend' of its creation on this website.
Why Blackbeard?
One word: History. In case you're not aware, the world's most famous pirate called the Outer Banks home and actually died in Ocracoke inlet in 1718. The Outer Banks has completely embraced Blackbeard as part of its history.
What's up with our flag? What does it mean?
Every nation must have a flag. Ours is full of historical references.
The 'skeletal man with the spear and heart are taken from a flag that is widely associated with Blackbeard. (to let you in on a secret - it wasn't really Blackbeard's flag - but in the words of the late modern day pirate and Outer Banks legend Glen Eure - "never let the truth ruin a really good story".)
Many flags have dates on them and the date 1587 harkens back to when the first full time English settlement was set up in the new world and it happened right here on the Outer Banks on Roanoke Island.
The stars are on the flag because an incredibly high percentage of flags have stars or constellations on them and we think stars are cool. The stars on the left side form a constellation in the shape of the Outer Banks and the stars on the right side replace 3 blood droplets from the bleeding heart on 'Blackbeard's' flag.
Is this new?
Yes. While it's been cooking for a few years, it's just come to fruition in 2026 with our official launch in August of 2026
