The Legend of
The Blackbeard Republic

On March 17, 2020, the winds carried strange news across the Outer Banks. By order of the Board of Governors, a blockade was raised at the bridges, barring all but locals and essential souls from crossing onto the narrow chain of islands. The rest were turned away, left staring across the water as if the Banks had slipped loose from the mainland and drifted out to sea.

And in a manner of speaking… they had.

Seeing his chance, Captain Owen McDaniels strode to the eastern end of the Wright Memorial Bridge, boots firm and eyes on the horizon. With a flourish worthy of any old sea dog, he planted his flag in the sand and claimed the islands for all who loved them—locals, natives, and salty-hearted visitors alike.

“From this day forth,” one might imagine him declaring, “these shores be the Blackbeard Republic!”

Word spread swift as a nor’easter, and before long a Pirate Council was formed—The Brethren of the Coast—a lively band of free spirits, beachcombers, and modern-day buccaneers. A Pirate King was chosen (no doubt amid much debate and a bit of laughter), and the Republic set its course.

Their first order of business? To send up a hearty cry: “Lift the blockade, ye landlocked scallywags! Let all who love these shores come and go as the tides allow!”

Their second? A bit more practical, though no less wise—to let the old authorities carry on with their duties, keeping the peace while the Republic flew its proud and playful flag.

And though the blockade has long since fallen and the bridges once again welcome travelers from near and far, the spirit of the Blackbeard Republic still rides the salt air.

For anyone who’s felt the ocean breeze, watched the sun sink into the sound, or shared a smile with a stranger on these sandy shores knows the truth: Once the Outer Banks get in your blood… you’re part of the Blackbeard Republic. It lives on—free-spirited, sea-swept, and just a little bit rebellious.
